Enjoy My Original Songs!

Songwriting is my way of channeling my feelings and my thoughts. Not just mine, but the things I see, the people I care about. My head would explode if I didn't get some of that stuff out. --Dolly Parton

Songwriting is a very mysterious process. It feels like creating something from nothing. It's something I don't feel like I really control. --Tracy Chapman

I always loved music but I didn't start writing songs until I was in my 20's. Things happened to me that had to be expressed. A friend and I were going to start a band and we wanted to our own stuff. So... we wrote songs. I wrote some. He wrote some. Our band never happened but the songs survived. I hope you enjoy this musical trip inside my head, soul and heart.

My process for writing a song varies. There is not a consistent method I use. I may have a strong feeling of sadness, love, joy or longing. I start to put words to those feelings and then work out some chords on a guitar. I may hear a catching riff on the the radio and duplicate the beat with my own words and music. I've had dreams where music comes to me, too. I might be thinking of someone and the words I want to say to them and make it into a song. I may have a melody come to mind so I'll record it on my phone for later use. I remember writing "Maryland's Not Texas" while I was driving down from Lake Meredith on the 4th of July one year. I had all the words and music in head. I kept on going over it again and again so I wouldn't forget it before I got home and worked it out. It's not something I can control in any specific way. It's somewhat mysterious but I don't question it. Maybe there really is a Muse at work. It happens the way it happens.
